Head to Head competition
is the most common type of play with Comanche Gold. Cool Desert
Night is the map of choice. Cool Desert Night gives the best
selection of weapons with the best landscaping.
Mission Parameters
Mission Time:
30:00
# of Pilots: up to 8
Landscape: Desert Cliffs
Visibility: Dark (Night Vision)
Your weapons
load out consists of
Cannon -
500 rounds
Hydra Rockets
- 44
Stinger Missiles
- 8
Hellfire
Missiles - 2
The arena is based
in the desert with dunes & cliffs to maneuver through.
With 4 or more flyers, the action stays pretty constant. Be
sure to take along your night vision goggles though because
it sure is dark out there. The game time is 30 minutes and
is also just about perfect. I Love This Map!
Meadow
Lands
Meadow Lands is
the most difficult map to fly due to the mountainous terrain.
The weapons load out is the same as Cool Desert Night but
that's about where the similarities stop.
Mission Parameters
Mission Time:
40:00
# of Pilots: up to 8
Landscape: Mountains & Valleys
Visibility: Daytime
Your weapons
load out consists of
Cannon -
500 rounds
Hydra Rockets
- 44
Stinger Missiles
- 8
Hellfire
Missiles - 2
This is a daytime
map with lots of peaks and valleys to wander through. This
is another favorite map of mine. Flying Extreme NOE in the
Meadow Lands terrain is very difficult to do with out hurting
yourself frequently. Meadow Lands is a great place to go fly
to improve your flying skills.
Red
Rock
Cannons & Rockets
only. Daytime map on a red desert type terrain. This is a
cannon fest map as well as Rocketry 101.
Mission Parameters
Mission Time:
15:00
# of Pilots: up to 8
Landscape: Desert Cliffs
Visibility: Daytime
NASCAR,
Move over! Here comes Comanche! Here
is something to do instead of just blowing up everything that
moves.
Instead
of using weapons against your adversaries, try using speed.
Racing
can be a fun way to compete against your friends in a no-combative
competition. Chose a map like CDN (Cool Desert Night) and
designate a race way. (Plot a course & make sure everyone
understands the course.) Then everyone starts at the waypoint.
One flyer counts down from 3, 2, 1, go.
Click
the map to see some sample courses.
It
is best to specify altitude limits (to keep the pogo experts
honest), and the number of laps required to complete the race.
I like to let other people chose the course because it helps
to keep everyone interested in the racing action.
Try
it out for yourself & let me know what you think.
To
play King of the Hill, start the game & use
your farp # as your rotation #.
(Get
a map here)
Flyer
on host farp is #1 & flies against player from farp 2.
All
flyers report to the MESA
(see
map)
as the grandstands
of the arena except for the Host & the Challenger.
Host stays at host farp & the challenger fly's to farp
7. When the challenging flyer reaches farp 7, they call out,
or type the message READY. The King
then responds when ready with ENGAGE.
At this point both flyers head to the waypoint.
The
winner of the ensuing battle will then fly to a farp if need
be, choosing from any farp on the front side of
the map & tell the next flyer, #3 at this point, to fly
to the starting point. (farp 7) The challenger
waits for the King to
call ENGAGE
and it starts all over again.
The only real
RULES to the game are as follows.
1. If you
are not in the current "called" fight, you do
not engage anyone in the field.
2. Neither the challenger nor
the KING can hide amongst the
spectators & wait for their opponent.
3. If both pilots die in the engagement, that last man standing
is the KING.
4. The game is the judge of who gets the kill.
Engagement
Area is W1.
(Hopefully Dead Mans Alley if there are spectators sitting
on the Mesa.)
These
same guidelines can be used in teams play as well. (Works
well with 3, 2 man teams.)
Obviously flying
as a team means communication. Comanche Gold doesnt
have a vocal communication package integrated but all is not
lost. Roger Wilco
is a 3rd party software package that allows users to communicate
over the Internet in real time. If you modify the Comanche
Gold Wsetup.exe file you can use RW &
fly at the same time. This opens a whole new world of combat
in Comanche.
One area that is
good to develop is formation flying. Click

Currently,
I use a CH
Products
setup. The stick is the F-16 FighterStick, I have the
CH Products PRO Throttle attached and a pair of CH Pedals.
Overall, the performance has been really good. The Pro Throttle
has some software that will program any stick
connected to it. Pretty cool huh? I thought so too. An excellent
feature built into the throttle controller. From
October of 2001 to March of 2002, I took a long break from
flying. Part of the reason for my hiatus is that the Pro Throttle
developed a "twitch". It is quite difficult to be
competitive when you are having to correct and fight a sudden,
unexpected & completely at random nose dip & pitch
to the left. I finally upgraded to all USB devices
and the 'twitch' has disappeared.
I like the feel of the F-16 Fighterstick but the Pro Throttle
feels a little awkward.

I
have used the Saitek X-36 and IT ROCKS!! This
flight control system is fully programmable & very comfortable
to use. Saitek's
web site of course includes info about the
products & support for those products. They also have
software updates for the devices & multi-language support.
I was forced to contact tech support for
problems with the controller more than once though. The first
time was not long after I picked up my first Saitek. Unfortunately
then, I was brushed off by the support staff & forced
to fix the stick by my own means. Believe it or not, I decided
a few months later to purchase another Saitek. I liked the
functionality so much that I decided to purchase another identical
joystick. After logging another gazillion hours on the new
stick the same problem started occurring. I e-mailed tech
support again, ( this is about a year after the first try
) this time they were very helpful & gladly provided me
with the support that I needed. Thank you Fernando Pulido.
It seems that Saitek took a very big step in the customer
service department. Saitek has an excellent product in the
X-36 & I highly recommend this stick to anyone on the
market.

You
will obviously find a wide variety of sticks from player to
player but one of the most common sticks is the Microsoft
Sidewinder series. I have never used one of the sidewinder
sticks but most reports are favorable and they are very popular
among Comanche pilots. CH Products makes a few other quality
sticks as well as what I have mentioned above. Logitech has
some nice products. I have used a couple of Wingman joysticks,
the digital, the digital extreme, but thought they were over
priced and had problems. Come to think of it, every joystick
I have owned has at one point or another, developed a "twitch"
just like the current stick.
Attach
this system to most any office or desk chair. Great for computer
professionals and gaming enthusiasts alike.
Create your own
pilots chair with this system.
Mount your joystick, throttle, keyboard and mouse to your
existing office chair.
Completely configurable.
Several different configurations to choose from.
The
best way to find out who is ready to fly is to launch Kali
& look for any games that may already be open to join.
If no games are present, start one of your own, someone may
be waiting for someone else to host a game that they can join.
Kali provides chat session hosting prior to game launch and
a robust, customizable interface.
There
are two places to look for games in Kali. Under "Chat
Servers/Game Servers", and under "Game
Lobbies". You can see the name of each pilot
in that specific game lobby by single clicking on the icon.
If you double click the icon, you will enter the lobby.
None
of this would be possible without NovaLogic
providing Comanche Gold. However, according to the latest
reports, NovaLogic has stopped supporting the Comanche GOLD
series on NovaWorld
entirely. NovaWorld is NovaLogic's very own game server where
players met (past tense) to fly with each other. Currently,
everyone MUST fly on KALI.
Roger
Wilco allows flyers to have communication during the game.
You can use this type of technology for playing teams games
or just to be able to talk to every one in the game. This
software makes Comanche Gold complete with communication.
There are other communication software's available but most
of the flyers on Comanche are already using Roger Wilco so
RW is the obvious choice.
This
utility allows you to capture screen shots quickly & easily.
Configurable Input & Output methods as well as execution
hot keys means you can setup this utility to suit your needs.
